I made a crude drawing of my idea for a Leprechaun trap and gave the students all the materials, which mostly consisted of varying lengths of PVC pipe, elbows, and T connectors. Watch as they figure out that they can connect the pipe with the elbows, discover that the pipe is of different lengths, and are successful at putting them together to make a rectangle. Then they realize that there are left over pieces and have to rethink and take their structure apart to accommodate for the other pieces to make the 3D structure. It is truly amazing to watch them working together and their brains work!
